Known as Walers, they were a special kind of horse as they could withstand great heat, travel great distances and perform great feats in battle. They served their Light Horsemen most significantly in the Desert War . Across the inhospitable terrain of the Middle East, they carried the first of the victorious Allied forces into Damascus in 1918. With over 70,000 succumbing to the horrors of the conflict, what happened to 50,000 horses, who gallantly served Australia`s forces, at war`s end?
