The city's thriving gay scene proved to be momentous in both Isherwood's personal and professional life; during this time he met Jean Ross, the eventual inspiration for CABARET character Sally Bowles (Imogen Poots, BOUQUET OF BARBED WIRE), and fell madly in love with a young street cleaner named Heinz (Douglas Booth, WORRIED ABOUT THE BOY). The journey of self-discovery was a world away from the repressive values of his mother (Sally Duncan, ROME) in England, and --as chronicled in this lavish drama-- the intoxicatingly decadent German subculture was irresistible to the blossoming literary legend.
